Job Description

Coordinator of Student Accessibility Services

The Coordinator of Student Accessibility Services supports students with a wide range of disabilities by facilitating access to educational opportunities through appropriate accommodation and advocacy. This position ensures compliance with federal, and state disability laws and promotes inclusive practices across the campus.

Under the direction of the Director of the Student Success Center, the Coordinator of Student Accessibility Services shall be responsible for (1) leading efforts to advance accessibility beyond compliance, promoting a campus culture of inclusion, (2) collaborating with campus stakeholders to support informed decision-making and ensure compliance with University policy and federal/state regulations. (3) provide individualized support and coordinate accommodation for students with disabilities across academic, housing, and dining contexts, and (4) chair the Housing Accessibility Committee and ensure the implementation of housing-related accommodations.

Essential Roles and Responsibilities Include:

  • Provide broad leadership and strategic planning for the Student Accessibility Services program.
  • Provide support to individual students with disabilities including individual meetings, evaluation of disability documentation, and implementation of appropriate accommodation and support services.
  • Maintain current knowledge of disability laws through professional development and reviewing federal updates on a regular basis.
  • Oversee development and dissemination of marketing material on Accessibility Services including technology resources such as Read and Write and Glean.
  • Consult with faculty, staff, students, and prospective students regarding the needs of individuals with disabilities; promote equitable learning opportunities for students with disabilities.
  • Assist faculty and staff in developing fair and effective instructional methods and adaptations.
  • Collaborate with campus housing staff to evaluate and implement disability-related housing accommodations, such as accessible room assignments, service/emotional support animal approvals, or modifications to the living environment.
  • Connect students with campus dining services to facilitate dietary accommodations, including medically necessary meal modifications, food allergy considerations, and access to allergen-safe dining options.
  • Supervise Peer Educational Coach for students with considerable time management, social, or technical needs.
  • Collaborate with Student Accessibility Specialist on students registered with accessibility services and their needs, specifically those related to testing accommodations.
  • Prepare and deliver workshops, peer groups, and educational support material on disability-related issues to faculty, staff, and students. Collaborate with various offices and departments.
  • Develop and update policies and procedures that support the Americans with Disabilities Act, Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, the Fair Housing Act, and disability-related theory, models, and trends.
  • Maintain records and prepare reports regarding services for students with disabilities.
  • Knowledge of community resources including the North Dakota Disabilities Services Council, state and community agencies.
  • Maintain knowledge of current on-campus resources, such as TRIO/SSS, tutoring, and financial aid.
  • Coordinate and ensure proper implementation of contractual obligations provided by vendors, for such tasks as captioning and sign language interpreting.
  • Facilitate the acquisition of assistive technology to help students access materials in alternative forms and work with individual students on their effective use.
  • Coordinate and proctor exam accommodations for students with disabilities as needed.
  • Provide service to the University that includes meeting attendance, committee involvement, and support of University sponsored events.
Desired Minimum Qualifications, Education, and Experience Include:
  • Required: A Bachelor’s degree in Special Education, Social Work, Rehabilitation, or a closely related discipline. At least five years of experience in disability services, student affairs, ADA/Section 504 compliance, or student support services.
  • Preferred: A Master’s degree in Special Education, Counseling, Psychology, Social Work, Rehabilitation, Higher Education, or a closely related discipline.
  • Preferred Leadership Experience: One to three years of experience in a supervisory or leadership role, including responsibility for managing budgets and/or overseeing programs.
  • Additional Qualifications: Demonstrated familiarity with assistive technology, case management practices, and applicable legal and regulatory frameworks.

Knowledge and Skills Required:
  • Proven knowledge of best practices as defined in the Association of Higher Education on Disability (AHEAD), the Commission on Rehabilitation Counseling, and the American Counseling Association.
  • Extensive knowledge and understanding of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), the Americans with Disabilities Act Amendments Act (ADAAA), Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act Amendments of 1998, the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), and other pertinent federal and state laws that provide for an accessible higher education experience for students with disabilities.
  • Knowledge of models of disability and inclusive educational design and their applications in higher education.
  • Knowledge of testing for and ability to interpret, psycho-, neuropsychological educational, and other professional documentation to determine reasonable accommodations for students with disabilities.
  • Knowledge of the functional limitations of students with disabilities, and an understanding of their academic, social, and emotional needs.
  • Competency in software and technology that supports students with disabilities, such as screen readers, text-to-speech/speech-to-text, accessible eBook formats, audio books, captioning services, assistive listening devices, transcription software, video relay services, note-taking apps, alternative input devices, voice recognition software, and focus tools.
  • Able to develop a database of viable community resources related to academic and other supports for students.
  • Highly organized and able to manage multiple projects with proactive problem-solving and sound judgment.
  • Skill in conflict resolution, decision-making, and responding to diverse requests under pressure.
  • Demonstrate discretion, diplomacy, and professionalism when managing confidential information.
  • Strong communicator with excellent written, oral, and interpersonal skills.
  • Build and maintain a positive, collaborative environment across multi-stakeholder teams.
